Make Me Too - 13th to 31st October 2001The programme of events and exhibitions around Manchester showcased some of the best products from the city's craft and design community and encouraged the public to meet their makers and make purchases. The programme was launched by Anthony Wilson at CUBE on 16th October 2001. The events included:
Circus - an exhibition of contemporary makers at Object 57
Circus exhibits work by 8 to 10 emerging artist-makers incubated on North West Arts Board's Setting Up Scheme. Exploring themes of theatricality, risk, fascination and showmanship, Circus celebrated the powerful seduction of the design object.
Graduates: Best of 2001
An exhibition of work at Manchester Craft & Design Centre, selected from that year's Manchester Metropolitan University and City College Manchester graduates
Make Me.....
An exhibition of the work of eighteen designers and makers from Manchester and the region, shown in Sydney, Australia earlier in 2001
100% Manchester @ Ferrious
An eight day exhibition of new contemporary furniture and lighting at the Ferrious showroom presented some of the best contemporary design from Manchester, with work by established designers and emerging talent.
Store Me - containers
A selling exhibition in shipping containers, showcasing new work from Manchester designers, was located outside Bridgewater Hall. Sponsored by Urban Splash, designers sold wearables and jewellery, lighting, furniture and ceramics direct to the public.
Design Seminar - Union North
Liverpool based design practice Union North discussed a selection of their architectural and interior projects that integrate print, product and furniture design in a single holistic process.
Smart Art
A panel discussion at CUBE for practising artists, designers, makers, representatives of commercial galleries and the retail sector; focusing on the production, promotion and licensing of art multiples and design objects. Hope London-Morris, the then Director of Castlefield Gallery, chaired the discussion with artists, curators and industry representatives.
Fashion Show
Islington Mill hosted and showcased exciting new fashion design and designers from Manchester.
The Art Department Seminar - Michael Trainor
The Art Department, a group of three artists - Michael Trainor, Wendy Jones and Liam Curtin specialise in working with other artists to produce art in public spaces. Works have included a neon whale inside a decompression chamber and a 200 ton steel sculpture about sexual tension. Michael discussed the commissioning and design process of the artworks installed by The Art Department.
Make Me Too was supported by European Union European Regional Development Fund, CIDS, North West Arts Board and Urban Splash. The brochure and identity was designed and produced by Via Communications. The events were organised by Design Initiative and curated by John Williams and Gaby Porter.
