Make Me 2002 - 9th to 23rd November 2002The second annual programme of Make Me events was designed to show city dwellers and visitors alike the creativity of 37 Manchester based designer-makers in four main locations city-wide.
The 10-day celebration, encouraged shoppers to enjoy, buy and commission the best in fashion, interiors, jewellery and crafts direct from the designers.
As Seen At Designersblock
Direct from its London showing as the "fringe" event for 100% Design, this exhibition showcased the work of 12 designers from Manchester and the North West. Hosted by The Gallery at The Department Store, 5 Oak Street. This featured Anna Pickering, Burnt Toast, Cathy Pot, Damian Cruikshank, electricwig, Jason Taylor, KUBER, Mancart, Marko Polo, Polly Hitchen, Robobobo and Synchronized Liquid.
House
A selling exhibition that included furniture, bathroom fittings, tableware, sculptural works and light fittings. Shown at Urbis, Manchester's exhibition centre focusing on city life, this was part of the Next Move Scheme, supported by North West Arts Board and The Crafts Council. This featured John Egan, Duncan Harrison, Martin Lungley, Junko Mori and CJ O'Neill
Store Me
Shipping containers with selling exhibitions, showcasing new work from Manchester designers. Installed in Albert Square, as part of the annual Christmas Market, it also profiled textiles from six local designers, having returned from Manchester's Transatlantic Express debut in New York City, as well as a selection of accessories, lighting and ceramics. This featured: 24 Design, Stella Corrall, Death By Clothing, Definitive, Elec-tri-city, James Gott, Beth Graham, Hand Made In England, Adele Kime, Johnie Lionheart, Andrew Lu, Mike MacIntyre, Marko Polo, Matta, Method, CJ O'Neill, Post, Jason Taylor and many more.
Window
A live mannequin showcased work from four North West designers - jewellery, textiles, furniture and sculpture - in the window of popular design retail outlet, Lloyd Davies.
Colette Hazelwood - Experimental jewellery for people who like to experiment. Colette incorporates both precious and non precious materials in her innovative work, which can be seen at Halo, her shop at the Manchester Craft and Design Centre.
KUBER
A fusion between Michael Noah and Jonathan Woolley, both freelance furniture designers who create products for mass and batch manufacture. They worked closely with architects, interior designers and directly with the public, designing and creating objects to suit individual requirements.
Philippa Prinsloo
A textile designer working in the heart of Manchester, she was awarded a prestigious Next Move grant, sponsored by The Crafts Council and North West Arts, she has worked for international fashion companies and her interiors range. Zip up blinds, her collaboration with John Egan was shown at Urbis, Manchester.
Damian Cruikshank
Investigations into folding, centre around single sheets of material undergoing gradual change until new more sophisticated forms are created - a process Damian regards as growth. Lines are mapped and scored, surfaces evolve and edges meet creating internal voids.
Make Me 2002 was supported by European Union European Regional Development Fund, CIDS, North West Arts Board and URBIS. The brochure and identity was designed and produced by Love Creative. The events were organised by Design Initiative and curated by John Williams and Gaby Porter.
